A New Year the same wonderful location and wonderful people old and new!!!

Opening weekend will begin Thursday May the 27, 2010. We have only to endure a little more Winter till summer camping begins. I for one am having a tough time waiting. Therefore, to help endure this period of time I have created this blog site dedicated to all things about camping at our beloved property in Davis. Cooper Camp will be the same wonderful destination as always but there is hope that we will have new living quarters and maybe some new additions as well. The invite list for this years opening weekend will be increased but familiar faces will also be among the guests and hosts. Among the new faces will be my beloved dog Cicero an English Mastiff who like his buddies: Maggie, Lisel (spelling) and Veda (spelling). Dogs Campfires and Jer's strange Brew a yummy entree for your camping appetite. I Can't Wait can you?

Rich Rod to pay 4 millioin to WVU!!!

Maybe just maybe this saga will come to an end. It appears as was reported, now in several places that Rich Rod, or someone on his behalf, will have to pay the full 4 million in liquidated damages to WVU. The compromise is the attorney fees where each side will have to bear its own. This is a tentative agreement that if approved by the WVU Board of Governors will be a reality. I am not sure what the attorney fees will be but I am guessing somewhere in excess of 500k. That being said, it looks like WVU will basically be able to pay for this years staff with this money. Mostly, I am hoping that this will put to bed this era of WVU football. Rich Rod thanks for getting us to this point but good bye. It is time to move on the the Coach Stewart era full steam ahead. I could not resist posting this on our camp site.

Well campers it is time to set up an August outting...

I am now asking my brethren and sistas to give me a shout out on dates for our August events. I would love to hear from each of you on your availability. 2 bagger please get me Lacy's email so I can get her on this site. Also, I am thinking that we need to have TimPat get us some cool stuff from Dicks as he is now our hook to sporting goods. :) Also, 2bagger you promised some photos from our last camp out please post them. Anyway, we need to begin our planning so that we can have yet another wonderful weekend 'O bliss. Love you all so much I was inclined to write you some poetry to get you in the mood.

Time by DaGeek

Time for another day at the camp

Time for another fire

Time for another waterfall excursion

Time for another fun filled incursion

Time for a mellow day out in Davis

Time for a time without work or its stress

Time for a spell and peace for us each

Time for our camp not a day at the beach.

Heat wave

Right now Central Appalachia is going through a bit of a heat wave. I love camping, but I'm sort of glad that we didn't this weekend - the heat is simply oppressive (and I've got a cold). Anyway, I was just posting on here to see if folks had recovered from their inaugural Cooper camp-out sunburns and to see how folks were doing. Other than having a cold, I'm in pretty good spiritis - I would like to think that I was at least a small factor in Mike Garrison's coming resignation as president of WVU. There's still a lot to do, but I'm glad that this step has been taken.

But the biggest question is...

When will we camp again? WV-Day weekend is out for Jer and me, but I'd like to hope that we'll have ourselves another camp-out here in the near future.

Talk to y'alls soon.

4 more days till Camp begins. Woo hoo!!!

Well ladies and gents we are coming upon our beloved weekend of fun. Who is coming? What are they bringing? How long are they staying? Etc. Etc.

Confirmed as of Sunday were Holly, Geno, Jer, Jer's squeeze, and myself. I am hopeful that Tim and Pam are also going to be in attendance.

I helped dad chop up a Maple tree for fire wood. I am going to be at camp on Friday morning getting things in order. I would like to get some pulled pork for one evenings meal. I am looking to you other campers to let me know what you would like to eat. Geno informed me today that he was getting access to a fire top grill. Jer informed me that he is going to be supplying some IPA. I of course will see to it that some butterscotch schnapps for your coffee drinking pleasure. Jer and Geno will be pleased for sure. Anyway, please chime in and let me know who is in and who is not.

Election Day in the Mountain State.

What does it all mean?

Well for one thing it means that Thornton Cooper and Timothy Cooper are having their decision day. Good luck to both of them. I am hoping for the best. I am very proud of both of them for being active in the governance of our State, and Country. Win or lose they have both left a mark on the electorate and that is important.

It also means that we are 10 days away from the first Davis Camp out of the Year. I am trying to get a head count, so please sound off and tell me who is coming with you. I will be putting together a tentative menu for this glorious 3 day weekend. Yours truly is going to try to be there all day on Friday as I have make sure we are adequately supplied with firewood. My plan is to cut up some hardwood so that our fires will burn hot and long. -Pyro is happy about this I know.

I am anxiously awaiting the first toast of the weekend. I am craving Jer's Strange Brew, Geno's guitar and bards-man-ship as well as the always wonderful company of our camp goers. Anyway, please sound off as soon as you can so that we can know who is a go and who is a no-show.

Wishing I was there now!

The closer it gets to the campout the more I want to get out of Morgantown. I am so looking forward to it this year. It will be a wonderful break from school and all the regular places that I am stuck in all the time. I can't wait to get out in the fresh air, sit by a fire, "legally" drink, have Gene's awesome breakfasts... :-) ...and just hang out with friends. And now talking about this has made the wanting to be there now even stronger. Can't wait to see you all.

The Cool Down

I was thinking about how after breakfast the sun started to get really hot and we loaded up the vehicles and went to the waterfall. Nope, not the famous one....the one that belongs to just us. Jeremy rode with me and we downed cold beer to and from the falls. Well, truth be told, we also had more than a few tasty beverages while there. Remember how cool it was there. What a great retreat in the middle of the day. The gradient is unbelievable as you look down stream. I wonder how many feet it drops per mile. I like throwing rocks from that one boulder and see how far it will go or try to hit sticks after I sail them downstream.

The mountains are calling

Amidst the muck of mid-late winter weather, here in Morgantown we had a few days of gorgeous blue skies and warm temperatures (not today though - it's sleeting right now). In about 80 days we'll be enjoying the warmth and beauty of late May in Davis, WV, with beer, music, and camaraderie.

And soggy shoes.

Next weekend the Pittsburgh Symphony is reading my piece, but believe me, I'd rather be camping than locked up in some stuffy concert hall.

See y'all.

If you need gear

I have ordered a lot a stuff from this company...thought you may be able to use it yourselves...www.campmor.com. They often have "hot deals" and you can get some really good buys. I bought all my gear for the tundra trip from them. I highly recommend the wigwam socks!! Man they are comfy.

Excerpt from Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Leaves of Grass"

I sing the body electric
The armies of those I love engirth me and I engirth them.

Swim with the swimmers, wrestle with the wrestlers, march in the line with the firemen, and pause, listen, count.

I have perceived that to be with those I like is enough
To stop in company with the rest at evening is enough
To be surrounded by beautiful, curious, breathing, laughing flesh is enough,
To pass among them or touch any one, or rest my arm evr so lightly round his or her neck for a moment, what is this then?
I do not ask for any more delight, I swim in it a sea.

There is something in staying close to men and women and looking on them, and in the contact and odor of them, that pleases the soul well,
All things please the soul, but these please the soul well.

Captain Geno is back from Great White North and Holly is on a video board in Time square.

Thankfully our fearless captain called me today to report that he has survived the shear forces of winter. I am very proud of him as I am sure all of us are. I look forward to one of his "Captain's logs" very soon to update us.

On another note. My wife the Lovely Holly is now on a video board in Times Square for Weight Watchers take a look. Yup that is right I married a super-model. Way to go beautiful.

Welcome to blogging "Dearest" Timothy.

Thanks for the poetry my brother Joe.

4 months & change

My dearest fellow campers (well, actually my only fellow campers - your dearness to me is effectively irrelevant), it's been wicked cold here in Mo-town, and, as one of my profs says, I've "turned to the dark realm of politics" with increasing infamy in local media. In four agonizing months I will have participated in several political campaigns, performed two recitals, graduated, and hopefully I'll have gotten warm. [I NEED FIRE - where are you, Pyro?] That's a heck of a lot to do, but it'll all be done by the time of our first sacred campout. And believe me, I'll have many a beer to toast the occasion. Actually, I think I'll have one right now because 4+ months is way too long to wait.

Silly game really;
We could never catch the deer.
They were too damned fast.

Snow Wind and Ice...Oh My

Well as our captain is toughing it in the great white north I am having a serious jonesing for some camping. I really miss my peeps and want to commune once more. I have been thinking about what makes camp great and conclude that my words are simply inadequate. I would say however that it brings me to life. It provides a space to break bread and simply live with nature. I would like to have each of the readers of this blog at least sound off for me.

Captains Log, January 11, 2007 -- Firewood

With the First Mate living in another town I am sure it will be cumbersome for him to procure the firewood. We mainly have bought the wood from the convenience store. Does anyone have any ideas to obtain good seasoned split firewood? I could probably round some up but getting it there is the problem. Maybe Hawkeye can come this year -- If so, he has a truck. The pine is OK but it burns so fast and is punky. I would love to have some oak. Provides for a hotter fire too.

It appears that T-shirst will be made.

I will ask Weezie what we can do about that. He might be able to give us some good suggestions. And of course I will see to it that his company gets the work. As for the design I am asking each of you for suggestions. Thanks

First mates log supplemental

Well a happy New Year it was with members of the USS Fleetwood on shore leave. To say the least the Captain sure can dance. All was well in Elkins and I am elated that we had a chance to break bread and share some good times. It should also be noted that the author of this post said that a team from Morgantown would win a shocker in the desert and sure enough the same happened. Anyway, my fellow campers have a happy and glorious New Year and remember, "only you can start really cool camp fires".

Much love and respect,

Da Geek
